Ingredients
1 cup yellow or green split peas (soaked overnight in water)
2 cups low-sodium vegetable broth (or water)
1 teaspoon turmeric
¼ teaspoon cayenne
½ teaspoon salt
1 onion (diced)
1 ½ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
Dash of pepper
TIPS: Green split peas are a great substitute. Dal should be cooked long and slow for maximum creaminess. Can be as thin as soup or as thick as porridge by adjusting the amount of liquid.
PREPARATION
- First, drain the soaking water. Then, in a large pot, place the uncooked yellow split peas and the vegetable broth, and bring to a slow simmer.
- Add the turmeric, cayenne, and salt, and cover.
- Cook for at least 30 minutes, covered, until the yellow split peas are fully cooked, stirring occasionally.
- You can also continue to cook your dal for an additional 10-15 minutes, if you prefer, to allow the yellow split peas to break up and have a smoother texture.
- Either way, once the split peas are almost done, add the onion, cumin, and the clove. Cook for 5-7 minutes, until onion, is soft.
- Add a dash of pepper and more salt if desired, and serve hot with rice or alone in a soup bowl.
