Ingredients
1 cup of corn meal (P.A.N. brand is recommended)
1 ¼ cup of water*
1/8 teaspoon of salt
PREPARATION
- Pre-heat the oven to 350F Mix the corn meal with the water and the salt, until there are no lumps, then let the mixture rest for 5 minutes (this mixture is called masa).
- Divide the masa into 3, take each section one by one, and roll it into a ball. Once you have the ball, squish it down until it is in a circle with about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Put the handled masa on a flat pan, set it at medium-high, and cook for approximately 10min on each side. Then put in the oven for 5-8 minutes for the arepas to finish cooking internally.
*Optional: To add more nutritional value to your arepas, add some vegetables to your water! Try either beet, carrot, or spinach.
- Blend 1 beet, 1 carrot, or 1 ½ cups of spinach with 1 ¼ cups of water.
- After it has been blended thoroughly, strain the vegetable water to get rid of any large particles, leaving only the colored water.
- Use this water for the mixture instead and continue the steps as indicated.
