AUSTIN, TEXAS – Throughout September, the Capital Area Food Bank will observe Hunger Action MonthTM – a nationwide initiative designed to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger and join the movement to help end hunger. Hunger advocates from Central Texas and across the country are working together to bring awareness to the 1 in 6 people who face hunger in America – including 46,000 within the 21 counties served by the Capital Area Food Bank.
New for 2015 is the Spoontember™ online initiative. To get involved, supporters can share a “spoon selfie” or video of themselves balancing a spoon on their nose – a utensil that is most often used to prepare and provide food for others – and challenge friends and family to join them to generate awareness of the 49 million Americans who may not know where they’ll find their next meal.
In addition, the Capital Area Food Bank will commemorate Hunger Action Day® on Thursday, September 3, to encourage citizens nationwide to learn more about how hunger affects their community.
The Capital Area Food Bank is also providing several opportunities for community members to “Feed It Forward” and get involved in Hunger Action Month across Central Texas:
- DONATE by hosting a food and fund drive. Every $1 donated provides three meals.
- ADVOCATE by contacting your congressional leaders about child hunger.
- SHARE your story, a hunger fact or a Spoontember™ selfie.
- VOLUNTEER for a Hunger Action Day shift by visiting www.austinfoodbank.org/volunteer.
- ENJOY a film screening and panel discussion of “Just Eat it” at 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday, September 15, at the Alamo Drafthouse, 1120 South Lamar Blvd. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased on the Alamo Drafthouse website, www.drafthouse.com/movies/just-eat-it-a-food-waste-story/Austin.
