We, along with Feeding America and many of the nation’s charitable hunger relief organizations, are deeply disappointed that the House of Representatives was not able to come together on a piece of legislation that will help end hunger.
HR 5806, would have expanded and made permanent the food donation tax deduction, and made incentives to encourage IRA charitable donations and donations of land conservation easements permanent. This certainty in a tax deduction provision would make it easier for us to deepen relationships with food donors and expand our food rescue work.
So what now? First we say thank you to the House of Representative members who voted in favor of HR 5806. If your legislator is on the list, we encourage you to give them a call or send them a message on social media to say thanks. You can see the roll call vote here.
We especially appreciate your role in the fight and we thank you for your support. We would never have gotten this far, especially in this political climate, without you. Our progress on this bill shows that when we raise our voices together and hold our elected officials accountable, they do listen. Let’s build on this momentum and continue the fight into the next year.
And we know that the fight can continue. We, along with other charitable organizations, are committed to advocating for these tax breaks to be revived year after year until we can try again to get a permanent tax deduction passed.
