We know it takes everyone coming to the table to help Central Texans access the right foods needed for healthy and action-packed summer. The summer meals programs funded through the USDA brings free, nutritious food to the children in our community when school is out of session. As a program sponsor, we identify program sites that have great enrichment activities and need an easy-to-manage, low-cost solution for meal service. This year, we’re partnering with 45 sites at apartment complexes, housing authorities, charities and more to provide free meals and management knowhow so they can focus on making the summer fun for the kids in their programs.
Starting June 9, children ages 18 and younger can get free lunches and snacks at our sites and sites across Texas. For a full list of participating sites and to find one near you visit www.SquareMeals.org
The federal summer meal programs are finally starting to show promise and growth thanks in part to a law passed in 2011 by the Texas legislature, designed to increase school participation. In 2013, Texas added nearly 300 new sites and increased participation by 8 percent. Still, only 11 percent of eligible Texas children receive these meals in a state that has the ninth highest rate of childhood food insecurity. In order to reach more eligible children, the USDA is providing intensive technical assistance to help Texas and other states that have high rates of children at risk of hunger and low participation.
When you support the Summer Meals That Matter campaign to raise 1 million meals, you make it possible for us expand our public, private and charitable partnerships in the community. Help us nourish our youngest Central Texans by making your gift today.
