Transforming Lives Through Volunteerism: Lynn Barton's Impactful Journey with Central Texas Food Bank

The Central Texas Food Bank’s volunteers form the heart of our mission to nourish lives and strengthen communities across the state. Today, we’re honored to spotlight Lynn P. Barton, a retired United Methodist pastor whose spirit of service has been a cornerstone of his work with us since March 2020, when the pandemic first swept through our community.

Driven by a deeply rooted “helping gene,” as he calls it, Lynn stepped up during a time when many were feeling uncertain. “I hated to feel powerless,” he shared. “I wanted to make a difference for people facing hunger.”

With every shift, Lynn makes a tangible impact in the lives of our neighbors. Starting in the product recovery volunteer task area—now known as “sort”—Lynn has embraced roles like expediting, stacking pallets, and sorting donations, finding joy in the structured, hands-on work that helps put food on the tables of families in need.

Over the years, Lynn has become not only a steady presence but also a volunteer leader, guiding new volunteers and sharing his enthusiasm. His compassion and dedication inspire those around him.

“I love seeing people of all ages, races, genders, and faiths working together. It’s very encouraging in these divisive times,” he reflects.

For Lynn, volunteering isn’t simply about filling a shift; it’s a way to stay active, connect with people, and contribute to a cause he believes in wholeheartedly. One particularly meaningful experience came from a conversation with a fellow volunteer who had changed his name to "Legacy" to honor his late son. This moment resonated deeply with Lynn, reminding him of the power of connection and the stories behind the names we wear. Moments like these bring profound meaning to the work we do together.

In his time with the Food Bank, Lynn’s understanding of hunger has grown in depth and clarity. “Hunger is not limited to those who are houseless,” he explains. “It is ordinary folks just trying to get by.”

His involvement here has underscored the magnitude of food insecurity and affirmed that the work he does, no matter how seemingly small, contributes to a larger, shared purpose.

Reflecting on the uniqueness of our mission, Lynn shares, “The Food Bank’s approach is personal, uplifting, and tactile.” He’s seen firsthand how his efforts translate into support for neighbors, like his friend who, after facing personal losses, found comfort in the food assistance we provide. Each pallet he helps stack, each box he moves, represents an opportunity to bring hope and dignity to someone’s life.

When asked what he’d say to anyone considering volunteering with us, his message is simple: “It feels good to do good.” Lynn’s journey with the Central Texas Food Bank exemplifies how doing something, even in the face of overwhelming need, truly makes a difference. Volunteers like Lynn not only help nourish lives but also advocate for a hunger-free future in our communities, spreading circles of influence and compassion far beyond the walls of the Food Bank.

We’re grateful to Lynn for his unwavering commitment, and we invite everyone to join us—whether through volunteering, donating, or simply sharing our mission—to create a Central Texas where everyone has access to the nutritious food they deserve.
