The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) makes it possible for more than 1.5 million households in Texas – mostly children seniors and the disabled – to afford food. For many families, food stamp benefits don’t stretch far enough, so they turn to us for additional help with their food budget. The proposed House budget is looking to make deep cuts to the program by cutting benefits, preventing some families from getting help, or some combination of both proposals. If this passes, the cuts will have a significant impact on our work and the clients we serve. Data from our most comprehensive study on hunger in Central Texas, Hunger in America 2014: Report for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, reveals what’s at stake.
