At the Central Texas Food Bank, we understand that food insecurity can impact anyone, regardless of background or age. Many of our neighbors are individuals and families like Carlos, a retired mechanic who visits the Mobile Pantry distribution in South Austin to help ensure his family has enough nutritious food.
Carlos, along with his wife, relies on the Mobile Pantry to supplement their groceries. After retirement, their income has decreased, making it challenging to keep their pantry stocked with healthy and nutritious food. This is a story we see more and more often, as fixed incomes struggle to keep pace with rising food costs.
Carlos’ journey with the Food Bank began unexpectedly. While going about his usual routine, he noticed our Mobile Pantry distribution. “One day I was driving, and I saw they were giving something out. I stopped to see what it was and have been coming here ever since.” Perez said. That spontaneous decision has since blossomed into a regular commitment to accessing healthy food for his family.
Carlos mentioned how much he appreciates the “nice and helpful” volunteers who ensure a smooth and dignified experience for everyone. He doesn’t just come for himself and his wife; Carlos also takes food back for his mother-in-law and his daughter. This demonstrates how the impact of our Mobile Pantry extends beyond Carlos, and empowers support to help his extended family, creating a ripple effect of support throughout families and communities. Beyond Carlos, the Mobile Pantry’s impact extends to those he cares for, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and resilience.
