Driving Change in the Heart of Central Texas

Mar27

At the Central Texas Food Bank, our transportation team is critical in ensuring that our neighbors in need receive food assistance. From delivering food to more than 250 partner agencies to mobilizing food for our pop-up community pantries and collecting retail donations, our drivers are the backbone of our operations. This month, we are proud to spotlight Mauro Ramirez, a CDL-A Driver, as our Team Member of the Month. With his dedication and infectious sense of humor, Mauro embodies the strong work ethic that defines our team members.

Mauro's interest in working at the Central Texas Food Bank stems from his upbringing and desire to give back to his community. He understands the difficulties of financial hardship firsthand, having been the last of 14 children in his family. Growing up in La Pryor, Texas, Mauro was inspired by his FFA teacher's generosity of service, which taught him the importance of helping others and staying humble. After more than 23 years of experience driving for FedEx across the United States, Mauro sought a job where he could directly impact those in need, leading him to work at a food bank in Alaska and eventually at the Central Texas Food Bank.

Mauro is proficient in driving for the various programs the Central Texas Food Bank offers, but most often, you'll find him behind the wheel of our trailer trucks at Mobile Pantry distributions. During his tenure at the Food Bank, Mauro has observed a lot of change and growth, including the expansion of fresh produce offerings and the transition to "market style" client-choice mobile pantries, but he is proudest of our impact on the neighbors we serve.

Working alongside Mauro offers a glimpse into his unwavering commitment and genuine personality. With a penchant for humor and a drive instilled by his father, Mauro ensures that his tasks are completed efficiently and with a smile on the faces of his coworkers and the neighbors he encounters along the way. Mauro's dedication to ending hunger knows no bounds, with over 92,000 miles logged and counting. Mandy O'Connell, Community Distribution Manager, shares, "Mauro will jump in and do anything to help get food out to people. He's empathetic, super funny, and a huge asset to the organization." We're proud to have him on the road providing food assistance in Central Texas.
