The Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) is honored to highlight one of our incredible partner agencies, the African American Youth Harvest Foundation (AAYHF). For over a decade, this inspiring organization has been a pillar of support for youth and families in Austin/Travis County, bridging gaps in education, mental health, workforce development, and social services. Let’s take a closer look at their mission, their impact, and their invaluable partnership with CTFB.
Building a Legacy of Empowerment
Founded in 2007, AAYHF was born out of the need for culturally competent, community-driven support systems for African American youth and families. With over 14 years as a CTFB partner, the foundation continues to uplift its community with a mission to empower and strengthen families through comprehensive wraparound services. These services range from workforce development and mental health counseling to mentorship and technology resources. AAYHF’s hands-on, intentional approach ensures that families not only receive support but also thrive.
“At AAYHF, we are more than just a resource — we are a community committed to creating lasting change,” said Elaine Lofton, Director of IT and Program Coordinator of AAYHF. “With the support of partners like the Central Texas Food Bank, we’re empowering families, uplifting youth, and building brighter futures.”
Addressing Food Insecurity
Food insecurity remains a significant barrier for many families and children, impacting their ability to succeed in school, maintain emotional well-being, and achieve their full potential. Through CTFB’s partnership with AAYHF, we are addressing immediate food insecurity while also creating pathways to stability and empowerment for families in our community.
“With the Central Texas Food Bank by our side, we’re not only meeting immediate needs but also helping families build resilience and focus on long-term goals,” said Michael Lofton, CEO of AAYHF.
Through daily food distributions and emergency assistance, AAYHF ensures families have access to nutritious meals while also benefiting from the foundation’s other wraparound services, such as mental health support and educational programs. This holistic approach helps families focus on overcoming challenges and building brighter futures.

Inspiring Stories of Impact
The work of AAYHF is filled with stories of transformation. One such story is that of Jeremiah (name changed for privacy), a young man who came to the foundation facing housing instability, food insecurity, and academic challenges. With the support of AAYHF, Jeremiah was able to stabilize his living situation, access nutritious meals, and receive mentorship that reignited his passion for education. Today, he’s thriving — a testament to the power of community-driven support.
Celebrating Black History Month
At CTFB, Black History Month is an opportunity to honor the achievements of Black leaders while amplifying the voices of partners like AAYHF, whose work uplifts the community and creates lasting change. For AAYHF, Black History Month is a call to action; empowering the next generation to create a history of their own. The foundation’s work is deeply rooted in the legacy of Black leadership, service, and resilience. By addressing systemic challenges and creating pathways for success, AAYHF is contributing to this legacy and ensuring a brighter future for the communities it serves.
A Partnership That Makes a Difference
Since partnering with CTFB, AAYHF has been able to expand its impact by ensuring no family has to choose between food and other essentials like housing or healthcare. This collaboration strengthens trust within the community and provides a foundation for families to focus on overcoming challenges. Through partnerships like this, we’re working together to nourish communities and build a future where every family has the resources to thrive.
