So often we are working in silos, and when we look around and talk with other stakeholders we can find common ground and common goals. Food Policy for Food Pantries
Description: Edwin Marty, Food Policy Manager for the City of Austin, and Kathy Green, Senior Director of Advocacy and Public Policy will provide an overview of how food policy councils can impact and assist with your effort to improve access to healthy food. Expanding Food Access: Connecting Your Community to SNAP
Description: Did you know that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities? SNAP (food stamps) is a powerful tool in the fight against hunger and millions of Texans are stretching their budgets with SNAP. We can help your clients enroll in the program and make healthy food more affordable for them and their families. The CTFB Social Services Team provides phone and in-person consultations in English and Spanish. We work in partnership with the Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC) department to provide the following services free of charge: explaining how the application process works and what to expect; completing and submitting your application packet completely and correctly to HHSC; convenient and private personal consultations; providing information on additional resources as needed. Come hear more about the program and partnership possibilities from CTFB staff and your Partner Agency colleagues already leveraging SNAP to expand food access for their clients. Immigration: Understanding Fears and the Right to Food
Description: Join immigration experts Alexandra Minnaar, Managing Attorney at RAICES, and Cristina Parker, Immigration Programs Director for Grassroots Leadership, for a deep dive into how recent changes to immigration policy has altered our neighbors access to emergency food assistance and SNAP resources. There will be time to discuss how immigration policy is affecting your site and Iliana Gilman, Chief Executive Officer at El Buen Samaritano, will share with the group how her local Austin food pantry has been facing these challenges. A Healthy Pantry Initiative: Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice
Description: Join members of the Food Bank’s Community Health and Nutrition Team and your peers to learn about how food insecurity impacts client health, and what your food pantry can do to positively affect your clients’ health outcomes. In this session, we will identify strategies for promoting Foods to Encourage to improve client dietary intake and we will learn about best practices for implementing these strategies in a variety of pantry settings.
